Introduction — Understanding Scientific Names

If you’ve ever looked at a plant or animal label and thought,
“Why is the name so long and complicated?” — you’re not alone.

In aquariums, terrariums, and even house plants, you’ll often see names like Anubias barteri or Neocaridina davidi. These are not just scientific jargon — they are actually useful shortcuts that tell you what you’re looking at.

This guide is written for beginners. You don’t need to learn Latin or memorise complex terms. Instead, you’ll learn how to recognise patterns, understand what names are telling you, and use them with more confidence when choosing plants or animals.

If you’ve ever been unsure about species names — or want to stop guessing when you see them — this will make things much clearer.

 

Why Everything Has a Two-Word Name

It simply means every species is given a two-part name:

What Do “sp.”, “cf.”, “var.” Mean?

These are commonly seen in shops and listings.

cf. “Compare to” Looks similar, not confirmed
aff. “Related to” Close relative, different species

→ Rotala (genus)
→ rotundifolia (round leaves)

So even without seeing it, you already know something about its structure.

Another example:

Ludwigia palustris
→ a Ludwigia species that grows in swamp-like conditions

This is how scientific names become useful, not complicated.

Next time you see a label:

  • Try to recognise the species word
