What Is a Slime Mold?

Slime Mold (Physarum Polycephalum) is a unique, often brightly coloured, single-celled organism known as a protist that act as giant amoebae

Where are they found?

Found in damp, shady areas, they consume bacteria and decaying matter, and are known for forming large, moving, multi-nucleated masses called plasmodia.

What is their life cycle?

They begin as microscopic, amoeba-like cells that emerge from spores. When nutrients become limited, these cells merge to form a plasmodium. As conditions worsen, the plasmodium develops fruiting bodies that generate spores.

(Note: The spores are not airborne. When the fruiting bodies rupture, the spores are released in a liquid form directly onto the ground.)

Fun facts

Slime Molds are known for their “intelligence”.  They demonstrate what scientists call network intelligence, meaning they can identify the most efficient paths between food sources, navigate through mazes, and optimize transport-like networks. And they can grow about 1–4 cm per hour.
