Creating Metallic Scratch Weathering on Model Kits

Metallic scratch weathering is a basic dry-brushing technique used to make painted model kit parts look worn around exposed edges and corners.

Instead of painting every scratch individually, a nearly dry brush catches the raised parts of the surface with metallic paint. This creates the appearance of the outer colour wearing away and exposing the metal beneath.

This Workshop Bench article focuses on one simple skill: preparing the brush correctly, applying the first metallic marks and building the wear gradually.

Before We Begin

This technique works best on dark or mid-tone painted parts because the metallic marks remain visible without overpowering the original colour.

  • Let the base paint dry fully before weathering.
  • Use only a small amount of metallic paint.
  • Remove almost all the paint from the brush before touching the model.
  • Concentrate the effect on exposed edges, corners and raised details.
  • Build the wear gradually instead of trying to finish it in one pass.

Workshop note: The original paint colour should remain dominant. The metallic paint should appear only where the surface would naturally receive contact and wear.

Part 1: Preparing the Brush

Step 1: Load a Small Amount of Metallic Paint

Place a small amount of metallic silver paint onto a palette. Touch only the tips of the flat brush into the paint.

Do not coat the full length of the bristles. A small amount gives you more control and makes the excess easier to remove.

Step 2: Remove Almost All the Paint

Wipe the brush repeatedly across a paper towel until it appears almost dry.

Test the brush on a clean section of the towel. It should leave only a faint metallic trace rather than a solid silver streak.

If the brush leaves a wet patch, continue wiping. Too much paint will cover the surface instead of catching only the raised details.

Part 2: Applying the First Metallic Wear

Step 1: Brush Across the Raised Edges

Hold the brush at a shallow angle and move it lightly across the raised edges of the model part.

Brush across each edge rather than following along it. This allows the metallic paint to touch the highest point while leaving the surrounding flat panel mostly clean.

Use very little pressure. The brush should skim the surface instead of pushing paint into panel lines and recesses.

Part 3: Building the Scratch Effect

Step 1: Add More Wear to Exposed Corners

Repeat the same light brushing action over corners and edges that should appear more heavily worn.

Build the metallic colour with several faint passes. Stop after every few strokes and inspect the part before adding more paint.

Keep some edges cleaner than others. Uneven wear looks more convincing than applying the same amount of silver everywhere.

Step 2: Stop Before the Edge Becomes a Solid Line

The scratch effect should remain broken and irregular. If the metallic paint forms a continuous silver outline around the part, the brush is too wet or too many passes have been applied.

Stop once the raised edges are visible from normal viewing distance while the original paint colour still remains dominant.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Creating a solid silver outline Stop before the metallic paint connects into one continuous line.

Maintenance and Limitations

This method creates the appearance of worn paint. It does not cut or carve physical scratches into the plastic.

Flat armour panels Long scratches across flat surfaces are better added with a fine brush, sponge or metallic pencil.

Final Thoughts

Metallic scratch weathering depends on controlling how much paint remains in the brush. Load a small amount, wipe away almost all of it, then brush lightly across selected raised edges.

Build the wear gradually and keep the marks irregular. A restrained finish preserves the original paint colour while adding enough exposed metal to make the model part look used.
