How to Build a Natural Planted Stream

Natural-looking streams begin by controlling where the water will flow.

In this Workshop Bench guide, you will build a reliable stream channel using styrofoam board, drainage cells and expanding foam, then disguise the structure with rocks, spillways, sand and planted banks.

The same method can be adapted to different stream shapes, planting styles and finishing materials.

Before You Begin

This guide focuses on building the stream itself. The false bottom, water reservoir, pump and outlet should already be installed before you begin.

The amount of water entering the planting terraces will depend on how completely you seal the stream banks. You can keep some areas wetter for bog or emersed aquatic plants, while higher and drier terraces can support plants such as begonias.

The stream-bed finish shown here uses silicone, sand and pebbles. You can substitute exposed rock, gravel, resin or another finish without changing the construction method.

How the Stream Is Built

The styrofoam board establishes the water route, while drainage cells create raised planting areas on both sides.

Expanding foam seals the joints and forms low retaining berms that keep the water inside the stream. Rocks are then fixed over these berms to shape the banks and conceal the construction.

Safety Notes

  • Wear disposable gloves when handling expanding foam, silicone or 502 glue.
  • Wear safety goggles and a mask when applying expanding foam or super glue.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area and avoid leaning directly over freshly applied glue.
  • Keep foam, silicone and glue away from children and pets.
  • Allow every adhesive to cure fully before testing the stream with water.

Workshop note: Complete and secure the main structure before the expanding foam cures. Position the styrofoam, drainage cells and temporary rock weights first, then seal the joints and build the retaining berms.

Part 1: Building the Stream Structure

Step 1: Build the Stream Path

Lay the drainage cells around the area where the stream will run. These cells will support the planted banks on both sides of the water.

Cut the styrofoam board to form a continuous route from the water outlet to the lower pool. Position it between the drainage cells and adjust the slope so the water has a clear downhill path.

At this stage, concentrate on the route and level changes. The stream will be shaped naturally with rocks later.

Step 2: Seal the Stream Channel

Apply expanding foam wherever the styrofoam board meets the drainage cells.

This first pass closes the gaps that could allow water to escape into the planting terraces. Work along both sides of the stream and inspect the full length of every joint.

Do not rely on decorative rocks to stop the water. The channel should already be sealed before the rocks are installed.

Step 3: Build the Retaining Berms

Apply another pass of expanding foam along both sides of the channel to create low retaining berms.

These raised edges keep the water inside the stream as it moves downhill. Follow the curves of the channel and keep the berm high enough to contain the planned water level.

The foam will be covered later, so prioritise a continuous barrier rather than a decorative shape.

Step 4: Hold the Structure in Position

Place rocks on top of the styrofoam board before the expanding foam finishes curing.

The foam can lift or shift lightweight pieces as it expands. The temporary weight keeps the stream level and prevents the board from moving out of position.

Leave the structure undisturbed until the foam has fully cured according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Part 2: Creating the Water Movement

Step 1: Create Pools and Spillways

Build several low foam ridges across the stream channel. Each ridge should be approximately 25 mm high or adjusted to suit the scale of the layout.

These ridges divide the stream into small pools. Water fills each pool before overflowing into the next section, creating a repeating pool-and-spillway sequence.

Without these interruptions, water may run down the centre as a thin trickle. The small pools spread the water across more of the stream width and create stronger visible movement.

Part 3: Shaping the Stream Banks

Step 1: Install the Structural Rocks

Place the larger structural rocks directly over the foam berms along both sides of the stream.

Use the rocks to create gentle curves, narrower passages and wider pools. Avoid lining them up at the same height or spacing them evenly.

Secure each rock with expanding foam or 502 glue where needed. Fill beneath and between the rocks so water cannot seep through gaps where they sit on the retaining berm.

The foam is responsible for sealing and supporting the stream. The rocks shape the visible banks and determine where the moss, substrate and plants will meet the water.

Step 2: Position the Spillway Rocks

Place a flat rock at each level change to create a defined spillway lip.

Adjust the height and angle so water gathers in the pool behind the rock before flowing over its edge. A slight drop creates splashing, visible movement and sound.

Check that the spillway sends water into the next pool rather than towards an unsealed bank. Once the position is correct, secure the rock and seal the surrounding gaps.

Part 4: Finishing the Stream Bed

Step 1: Add Sand and Pebbles

Apply a thin layer of aquarium-safe silicone across the exposed styrofoam and foam inside the stream channel.

Cover the fresh silicone with ADA La Plata Sand or ADA Colorado Sand, then press pebbles of different sizes into selected areas.

Keep some sections open and vary the pebble density. A completely even covering can make the stream bed look artificial.

This is a visual finishing stage. The stream should already hold and direct water before the sand and pebbles are added.

Part 5: Testing and Planting

Step 1: Test the Completed Stream

Allow the expanding foam, silicone and 502 glue to cure fully before switching on the pump.

Watch the water move through every pool and spillway. Check the joints beneath the bank rocks and look for any water seeping into areas that should remain dry.

Seal any remaining gaps and repeat the test before adding the final planting.

Plant moisture-loving species closer to areas that receive occasional overflow. Use higher or better-sealed terraces for plants that prefer drier roots.

As moss and plants establish along the banks, they will soften the rock edges and integrate the stream into the surrounding landscape.

Maintenance and Limitations

Debris Leaves, moss fragments and loose substrate can collect around spillways and reduce the visible flow.

Major reshaping Once the rocks, foam and stream-bed finish are cured, changing the route usually requires rebuilding that section.

Remove loose debris with tweezers and check the spillway openings during regular maintenance. Adjust the pump flow only after confirming that the channel and banks are fully sealed.

Finished Result

A successful planted stream is built in layers. The styrofoam establishes the route, the expanding foam seals and contains the water, and the rocks form the visible banks and spillways.

Once the stream bed is finished and plants begin growing along both sides, the construction blends into the landscape while the pools, moving water and planted banks remain the main attraction.

The same technique can be reused with different rocks, plants and stream-bed finishes while keeping the underlying construction sequence unchanged.
