Building a Proper Drainage Layer for Large Terrariums

A drainage layer is useful in larger terrariums, but it is not something every terrarium needs. In small closed bottles, the space is often too shallow for a proper false bottom. In larger terrariums with deeper substrate, however, a drainage layer can help protect roots, reduce waterlogging, and keep the planting layer fresher for longer.

Why Drainage Layers Matter
Why larger terrariums need better water control
In a deeper terrarium, excess water can collect at the bottom of the substrate. When the planting layer stays wet for too long, roots struggle to breathe, moss begins to brown, and the terrarium may develop sour smells or mouldy patches.
A drainage layer does not make a terrarium fail-proof. It simply creates a separate space below the soil where excess water can collect, away from the main root zone.

Understanding the Layer Order
The basic structure
A proper drainage system is not just a pile of LECA under soil. The layers need to stay separated so that water can move down while the soil stays above.
- Plants and moss sit at the top.
- Terrarium soil mix forms the main root zone.
- Drainage mesh separates the soil from the reservoir.
- Charcoal chips sit below or around the drainage layer.
- LECA or pumice creates the lower water-holding space.

Step 1: Add the Drainage Reservoir
Start with LECA or pumice
Pour a layer of Mini LECA into the base of the terrarium. For larger tanks, Medium LECA can be used instead. The goal is to create a loose, open space where excess water can collect below the soil.
For most beginner builds, the drainage layer does not need to be extremely deep. It should be enough to separate excess water from the roots without taking too much space away from the planting layer.

Step 2: Add Mini Charcoal Chips
Use charcoal as support, not a cure-all
Sprinkle a thin layer of Mini Charcoal Chips over the drainage layer. Charcoal can help absorb some impurities and keep the lower layer fresher, but it does not replace good watering habits.
Do not overfill this layer. A light, even covering is enough.

Step 3: Place the Drainage Mesh
Keep the soil out of the drainage layer
Cut the drainage mesh slightly larger than the base area. Place it over the LECA and charcoal layer, making sure it reaches the edges as closely as possible.
This step is important. Without mesh, soil will slowly fall into the gaps between the LECA, clogging the drainage layer over time.

Step 4: Add the Terrarium Soil Mix
Build the planting layer
Add Terrarium Soil Mix above the drainage mesh. This should be the deepest functional layer because it supports roots, moss growth and plant stability.
Gently level the soil, then shape it according to your layout. For a more natural scene, slope the soil higher toward the back instead of keeping it perfectly flat.

Step 5: Water Slowly
Moist is enough
After adding the soil, water slowly. The aim is to moisten the planting layer, not flood the drainage reservoir immediately.
If water collects heavily at the bottom on the first day, you have probably added too much. A drainage layer is a safety buffer, not a water storage tank that should always be full.
