A reusable wet hideout for isopods, designed to provide a humid retreat without relying on sphagnum moss.
The Cave is made from a porous, moisture-absorbing material. Add water to the hide and the structure gradually retains moisture, creating a localized humid refuge where isopods can shelter. This makes it useful for maintaining a moist microhabitat while allowing the surrounding enclosure to be managed separately.
Its enclosed interior provides a dark, protected space that can help reduce exposure and disturbance, while the textured exterior integrates easily into leaf litter, cork bark and naturalistic setups.
A Sphagnum Moss Alternative
Sphagnum moss is commonly used to create a consistently moist area inside an isopod enclosure. The Cave offers another way to provide this humid refuge.
Simply wet the Cave as required and allow its porous structure to retain moisture. There is no moss to replace or break down, making it a convenient reusable option for creating a dedicated wet zone.
It can also be used together with moss if preferred rather than strictly replacing it.
Moisture Where You Need It
Because the Cave itself absorbs water, moisture can be concentrated around the hide instead of requiring the entire substrate to remain equally wet.
This is particularly useful when maintaining a moisture gradient within the enclosure, giving the colony access to a humid retreat while other areas can remain comparatively drier.
Optional Spike Plate
When a freshly wetted Cave is placed directly on substrate, moisture can transfer into the material underneath and create an excessively wet patch.
The separately sold Moisture-Control Spike Plate can be placed beneath the Cave with the spikes facing upward. This raises the wet hide away from direct substrate contact and helps reduce excess moisture transfer into the substrate below.

How to Use
Wet the Cave with clean water and place it in the humid section of the enclosure. Monitor the hide and surrounding substrate and re-wet when required rather than following a fixed schedule, as drying rate will vary with ventilation, temperature and enclosure conditions.
For better separation between the wet Cave and the substrate, place the optional Spike Plate underneath with its spikes facing upward.
The Cave provides a humid refuge rather than controlling the humidity of the entire enclosure. Normal moisture monitoring and habitat management are still required.
