The Magenta Mystery Snail (Pomacea bridgesii) is a peaceful, freshwater aquarium snail highly prized for its vibrant pink-to-purple shells and light-colored bodies. They are highly effective at cleaning algae off glass and plants while remaining completely safe for your aquatic ecosystem.

Quick Stats

  • Size: Grows up to 2 to 5 cm (1–2 inches)
  • Lifespan: Average of 1 year
  • Diet: Omnivore (algae, blanched veggies, sinking pellets, and leftover fish food)
  • Temperament: Completely peaceful

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 10 gallons
  • Water Temperature: 20°C to 26°C (68°F to 78°F)
  • pH Level: 7.0 to 7.8 (they require hard, alkaline water to prevent shell erosion)
  • Tankmates: Safe with most peaceful fish and shrimp, but avoid aggressive species like loaches or large cichlids.
  • Important: Keep a secure lid on your aquarium. Mystery snails like to explore and may climb out of the water

Breeding & Care

  • Egg Laying: They are not hermaphrodites and require both a male and female to breed. Females lay distinct clusters of pink eggs above the waterline.
  • Shell Health: Their color can fade or become brownish if their diet is deficient in calcium. Supplement their diet with calcium-rich foods like cuttlebone, shrimp mineral powder, or blanched spinach.
  • Availability: True magenta mystery snails can sometimes be difficult to find and are often confused with darker purple varieties, but they are available from specialized breeders
