$24.80

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is a natural sand harvested from dried up freshwater lakes. It is made up of fossilised remains of tiny, aquatic organisms called Diatoms (algae), easily crumbles into a fine powder.

They are rich in Silica, which silica can be widely found in everything – from sand to plants and even in the human body!

DE has been used since the 1960s as a natural pesticide to kill fleas, mites and insects. And Silica has a hardness rating of 7 and is harmless to the touch to humans and pets.

DE can also be found in your toothpaste, deodorant, soap and are also used in wine filtration and anti-caking agent in our food.

Food Grade vs Filter Grade

These fossilised diatoms look like sharp, jagged crystals under the microscope and has many applications in the modern world.

There are 2 types of Diatomaceous Earth (DE)

  1. Food Grade
  2. Filter Grade

Food Grade DE is non-calcined, usually used as a natural insecticide, anti-caking agent, and is approved for use by EPA, USDA and FDA. They are also safe for all animals and though not medically proven, some people are advocating internal use of DE for health claims.

Filter Grade DE is calcined, and highly TOXIC to humans and animals. They are used for industrial purposes such as pool filtration. Avoid using Filter Grade DE at home!

How does Diatomaceous Earth Kill Pests Naturally?

As mentioned previously that these fossilised diatoms have sharp and jagged edges, just like broken glass. When crawling insects come in contact with them, their bodies will be cut and lacerated by the razor-sharp DE.

It will pierce through the exoskeletons of the insects and slowly dehydrate them.

However, Diatomaceous Earth will not cut or harm us, and is safe for use. Do take note that DE will also kill beneficial insects such as ladybirds. Use with caution.
