Benibachi Komb Food (50g)
Natural Kelp & Seaweed Supplement for Shrimp, Isopods & Crabs
Benibachi Komb Food is a premium Japanese powdered food made from a blend of kelp and seaweed ingredients, providing naturally occurring minerals, amino acids, vitamins and marine-derived nutrients.
Unlike pellet or stick foods, its fine powdered texture disperses across a wider feeding area. This makes Komb Food particularly useful for colonies containing juveniles and smaller individuals that may not easily compete around a single piece of food.
Developed primarily for shrimp, its seaweed-based composition also makes it a useful supplementary food for omnivorous vampire crabs and commonly kept isopods.
Key Benefits
-
Kelp & Seaweed Nutrition
Provides a natural source of nutrients associated with kelp and other seaweeds, including minerals, amino acids and vitamins. -
Naturally Occurring Seaweed Compounds
Seaweeds contain compounds such as alginates and other polysaccharides as part of their natural nutritional profile. -
Fine Powder for Broad Feeding Coverage
The powdered format spreads food across a larger surface instead of concentrating feeding around a single pellet. -
Useful for Juveniles & Colonies
Small particles are accessible to juvenile shrimp and other small scavenging invertebrates. -
Easy to Add to a Feeding Rotation
Particularly useful as the plant- and seaweed-based component of a varied feeding programme.
How to Use
Shrimp Aquarium
Recommended use: Seaweed nutrition + colony feeding
Feed a small amount 1–2 times per week, adjusting the quantity according to shrimp population and aquarium size.
The powder can be sprinkled directly onto the water surface and allowed to disperse naturally, or mixed with a small amount of aquarium water before feeding.
Because fine foods disperse easily, begin with a very small quantity. Avoid excessive dosing, particularly in smaller aquariums.
Suitable for:
Caridina · Neocaridina · juvenile shrimp · mixed-age shrimp colonies
Vampire Crab Paludarium
Recommended use: Plant-based dietary variety
Vampire crabs are omnivorous scavengers and benefit from dietary variety that includes both animal- and plant-derived foods.
Offer a very small pinch 1–2 times per week on a feeding dish, flat stone or other accessible feeding surface.
Komb Food can be rotated with protein foods and other appropriate foods to provide a broader nutritional profile.
Avoid heavily dusting wet substrate or the entire paludarium. Concentrated feeding in a defined area makes it easier to monitor consumption and remove excess food.
Suitable for:
Geosesarma spp. · Vampire Crabs
Isopod Terrarium
Recommended use: Seaweed-based supplementary food
Komb Food can be used as an occasional supplementary food for isopods.
Kelp and seaweed provide a different nutritional profile from the leaf litter and decomposing wood that form the foundation of an isopod enclosure. The powdered format also allows small quantities to be distributed among individuals of different sizes.
Offer a very small pinch approximately once per week.
For better feeding control, place the powder on a dry feeding slate, leaf, piece of bark or other defined feeding surface rather than broadly mixing it into the substrate.
The colony's primary food resources should remain decaying leaves, suitable decomposing wood and other species-appropriate organic material, together with an appropriate calcium source.
Suitable for:
Cubaris · Porcellio · Armadillidium and other commonly kept omnivorous isopods
Feeding Principle
Komb Food = Seaweed Nutrition + Broad Colony Feeding
Its main advantage is not simply "adding minerals."
Komb Food provides a seaweed-based nutritional component while its powdered form distributes food over a wider feeding area.
For shrimp, this makes it particularly useful for mixed-age colonies and juvenile feeding.
For vampire crabs and isopods, use it as a supplementary plant-based food within a varied diet rather than as a complete food or dedicated mineral supplement.
Important Feeding Note
Komb Food is highly concentrated and finely powdered.
Start with less than you think you need.
Excess powder can accumulate in an aquarium or humid terrestrial enclosure and contribute unnecessary organic material.
For terrestrial use, targeted feeding on a dish, leaf or bark is preferable because leftover food can be easily monitored.
Storage
Keep the package tightly sealed in a cool, dry and dark place, away from humidity and direct sunlight.
Always use a clean, dry spoon when handling the powder.
If storing under refrigeration, keep the package tightly sealed and allow it to reach room temperature before opening to minimise condensation inside the package.
