Freshwater sump filters are useful for large aquariums with heavy-waste fish because they hold more media and water volume. Start with the maintenance timing below, then use the signs and steps to keep flow, media, and the return pump working properly.

Why Sumps Need Regular Mechanical Cleaning
- Monster fish produce large amounts of solid waste.

What To Do
Before Cleaning
- Prepare a pail of aquarium water.
- Switch off return pump if cleaning near the pump chamber.
- Keep towels ready around the sump area.
- Check water level before removing pads or sponge.
- Do not remove all biological media at the same time.
Clean Mechanical Media
- Remove filter wool, filter pad, or coarse sponge from the first chamber.
- Rinse reusable sponge in aquarium water.
- Replace fine filter wool when it is too dirty or falling apart.
- Remove trapped food, scales, and solid waste from the chamber.
- Place mechanical media back so water flows through it evenly.
For monster fish tanks, fine wool may need frequent replacement. Coarse sponge can usually be rinsed and reused.
Care For Biological Media
- Leave biological media alone during normal cleaning.
- Rinse gently in aquarium water only when heavy sludge blocks flow.
- Do not clean all biological media at the same time.
- Keep media wet during maintenance.
- Return media to the same chamber after rinsing.
Do not deep-clean the whole sump at once. Mechanical media can be cleaned more often, but biological media should stay stable.
Check Return Pump And Pipes
- Switch off and unplug the return pump before removing it.
- Remove the pump carefully from the pump chamber.
- Clear debris from the pump intake cover.
- Open and rinse the impeller chamber if possible.
- Check return pipes for blockage or reduced flow.
- Reinstall the pump securely before turning power back on.
Restart And Check
- Make sure all media is seated properly.
- Refill sump to the correct operating level.
- Switch on the return pump.
- Watch the overflow and sump water level for a few minutes.
- Check that water is draining and returning smoothly.
- Listen for gurgling, sucking air, or pump vibration.
