Sponge filter maintenance

Sponge filters are simple air-driven filters that provide gentle flow and useful biological surface area. Start with the maintenance timing below, then use the signs and steps to clean the sponge without disturbing aquarium stability.

Sponge filters usually do not need frequent deep cleaning. Clean when flow weakens or the sponge is carrying too much visible waste.

Why This Happens

Why Sponge Filters Slow Down

  • They are simple and easy to clean.
  • They are useful as backup filtration in many tanks.

What They Are Limited At

  • They do not remove large debris quickly.

  • They take up space inside the aquarium.
  • They depend on a working air pump.

What To Do

Before Cleaning

  1. Prepare a pail of aquarium water.
  2. Switch off the air pump.
  3. Disconnect the airline tubing gently.
  4. Lift the sponge filter slowly from the aquarium.
  5. Keep the sponge upright to reduce dirt release.

Clean The Sponge

  1. Place the sponge in aquarium water.
  2. Squeeze the sponge gently several times.
  3. Remove heavy brown dirt, but do not make it perfectly clean.
  4. Check that water can pass through the sponge easily.
  5. Replace the sponge only when it breaks apart or loses shape.
Do not wash the sponge under running tap water. Use aquarium water to protect useful bacteria.

Check The Airline And Lift Tube

  1. Check airline tubing for kinks or loose ends.
  2. Make sure the check valve is installed in the correct direction.
  3. Rinse the lift tube if dirt is trapped inside.
  4. Replace blocked air stones if bubbles remain weak.

Restart The Sponge Filter

  1. Place the sponge filter back into the aquarium.
  2. Reconnect the airline tubing securely.
  3. Switch on the air pump.
  4. Check that bubbles rise steadily.
  5. Observe water movement around the sponge filter.
